MORE TO EXPLORE

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University are 2 liberal arts colleges in Minnesota. Even though they’re two schools, they feature 1 unified community through their student bodies, alumni networks, welcoming staff, and faith. They feature smaller class sizes so that any student has access to the resources and help they may need to succeed. They also offer financial aid and campus jobs so that everyone, regardless of income and social status, can receive a quality education. With a plethora of extracurricular activities and athletic offerings, There is More to Explore at CSB+SJU!

Replace was honored to work on rebranding the two schools with a focus on unification. The previous mark featured a Benedictine cross in a shield shape. Both campuses feature beautiful hexagonal stained glass windows and we were tasked with working a hexagon into the logomark. In addition to a new logomark, we chose new typefaces that would work for both schools, all their departments and institutions, and the plethora of school materials associated with them.

CSB+SJU DEPARTMENTS & INSTITUTIONS

Given the amount of different departments and institutions (Centers of Excellence) around the two campuses, we needed a system for these sub-brands that was flexible, while retaining a consistent look and feel, and gave the client a variety of solutions to use depending on the spaces available to them for signage, advertising and publications.

ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

We were asked to create various environmental graphic solutions for CSB+SJU. Some of these included new spring and winter banners for the campuses, a revised CSB Bookstore interior and large window bank, The Link, a bus that runs students between schools, and a series of stadium animations for The Minnesota United’s, Allianz Field.

CSB+SJU ATHLETICS

We worked on rebranding & refining the athletics departments for both schools. This included new CSB and SJU type lock-ups, new monograms, new iconography, publication specifications, and the creation of a consistent system that could be used for each of the various sports under the CSBSJU thletics Department.

BROTHER WILLIE’S PUB

Inside the Saint John’s University student center, there’s a bar named Brother Willie’s Pub. Named after the famous monk of St. Johns, William Borgerding. Willie, who died at age 93 in 2009, was such a popular fixture on campus that the school decided it would name the bar inside the Sexton Commons student center for him when it opened in 1993. We had the opportunity to rebrand Brother Willie’s to better align with the school’s new identity.

Design Process

We began our work with CSBSJU around October of 2023. Not sure if the cross was going to be an element in the new brand, we were initially tasked with exploring a variety of hexagonal logomarks both with a cross and without.
